Organize and develop a 750-850-word essay on “Checking Out,” a short story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.  The story is attached below.  This story can be found on page 1250 of the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries volume of The Norton Anthology of English Literature.  Do not write a paper that is longer than 850 words.

1. Argue the events in this story justify undocumented immigration or not. You need to choose one side over the other, but you must not neglect evidence in favor of the opposition. Instead, you need to supply clear and logical reasons for why you believe your position adequately counters the other argument.

In making your argument, you must include specific examples throughout the story. Quote from the story to support your argument (as well as when you must counter your own argument).

Do not put your name on the paper itself. Provide a title page with your name, the date, and the class (English 202 A). Number the pages of the text of your paper in the upper right-hand corner. The title page does not have a number; it is a prefatory page.

In your introduction, include, as the last sentence of your introduction, your thesis in which you state your opinion. Do NOT, however, engage into a political discussion of undocumented immigration outside the bounds of this story. 

Use MLA internal documentation to indicate the page in our text where each quotation comes from.

End your paper with a conclusion, but please do not simply restate your thesis.

Type the essay.  Double-space it.  Use one-inch margins all around, and use 12-point Times New Roman.
